The GREGORY HINES SCHOLARSHIP FUND

At the conclusion of every BTP session, the Gregory Hines Scholarship is presented to the student who has exhibited the most outstanding work in the area of tap dancing.  The tap faculty selects this student based upon observations of all tap dancing classes and performances during the Project.  The scholarship awards the recipient the opportunity to attend BTP on a full scholarship the following summer.

This scholarship was created in order to memorialize the late Gregory Hines, who was a featured teacher and artist at Broadway Theatre Project for many years.  Mr. Hines believed that BTP was the summer home of the best up and coming musical theatre talent.  He was committed to sharing his legendary and extraordinary gift of tap dancing with these students year after year, in order to perpetuate the dance form.

BTP is extremely committed to continuing the training in tap dancing that Mr. Hines began here many years ago.  The vow is to keep his mission alive.  The 2005 Broadway Theatre Project production at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center was dedicated to the memory of Gregory Hines and was attended by his son, Zachary, his fiance', Negrita Jayde, and featured Mr. Ben Vereen.  Shortly thereafter, the Gregory Hines Scholarship was created.

Support of the Gregory Hines Scholarship Fund will enable the Project to continue to do its part toward helping this uniquely American art form to thrive and continue to grow in excellence and participation.
